“Severely outdated, Sanju Baba deserved a much better comeback!”
We have had films where the parent of the sexually molested girl has taken up the task of eliminating the rapists after getting disillusioned by the lethargic legal system. The film "Mom "is a recent example where the mother takes it upon herself to kill the tormentors. This film is also similar where a middle class shoemaker of Agra takes up the job of demolishing the rapisists after the courts subject his daughter to harassment amounting to going through a rape a second time. The film is similar to the Nirbhaya case which rocked the capital some time back. I find this movie different in the following two areas 1. Both father and daughter together hunt out and eliminate the rapists. Makes sense because it is the daughter who has been wronged and her action comes under righteous indignation. 2. Like in the case of Nirbhaya one of the rapists in this film is slightly below 18 years of age. The movie suggests that we wait till he attains age of 18 and then ruthlessly punish him. The film also suggests quick and strong punishment and hints at the Islamic methods being followed in Saudi Arabian countries where rapists face near death punishment. Director Omung Kumar has no doubt done a good job though the film tends to get melodramatic at times specially towards the end when there is mention of devi shakti. Two well picturised romantic songs are well placed in the beginning of the film as they would not have fitted in later. The item number of Sunny Leone was not necessary and is also shoddily done. Sanjay Dutt impresses and does justice to the role though it is a moot point whether it was suitable for his comeback. Aditi Hydri has been shown a little too docile in a not so well written role. Sharad Keldar impresses as the villain.
