Verdict - A decent watch. Ishaan shines. Jahnavi makes a good debut.

    DhadakRelease date : July 20, 2018

Dhadak, as we all know, is a remake of the hit Marathi movie Sairat, which is a love story between a high caste girl and a lower caste boy. I loved Sairat for the freshness of its lead pair and the shattering climax that I took days to recover from. It is hard to not draw parallels between the two while watching Dhadak but after a while, you kind of forget the first one and allow yourself to be drawn into this movie.

Parthavi (nice new name!) and Madhukar are classmates in college. She is a rich politician’s daughter whereas his dad runs a restaurant in Udaipur. The two of them fall in love without much of a build-up and then are forced to run away when her dad finds out. Love flies out of the window when reality strikes and the two have to learn to love amidst concerns like earning money to pay rent and using a shared bathroom. Do they manage to leave their past behind and live happily ever after? Watch the movie to find out.

The falling in love bit felt a bit flat to me. But maybe the director’s approach was different. I think he tries to show us that it was still a blossoming love that had to take extreme steps due to circumstances. Or maybe they wanted to keep the movie short at 2 hours. Sairat was a full 3 hours which gave it enough time to flesh the story out. This one sort of takes the main points from that movie and builds around those like one would in a PPT. And the lack of effervescence that one saw in the Zingat song, (which still rules the charts at every festival), is kind of reflective of this feeling of flatness I got.

However, post-interval the movie seems surer of itself and it gets more engaging. The actors also seem surer of themselves and that gives the story a more assured feel. The end of the movie is, of course, its winning point and Dhadak almost manages to take you to the point that Sairat did.

Ishaan Khatter is absolutely charming. His Madhukar is innocent, charming and vulnerable with a kind of quiet determination. Ishan is a total winner. Janhavi makes quite an assured debut. She is not very impressive as the spoilt rich girl but comes into her own in the latter part of the movie as she struggles to make sense of her new life and then finally settles down to it, a more matured person. The scene in the train where they run away shows a quiet strength in her. She probably will do well in sensitive roles. The one thing I can’t get out of my mind is that she looks a lot like Renuka Shahane in many scenes. Maybe a different movie with a different look will work well for her. The supporting cast of friends provides some light-hearted breaks.

Dhadak is a decent movie, for me mainly to watch Ishaan light up the screen. I liked Sairat better but then I saw that first so it’s easy to be very biased. If you haven’t watched Sairat then this movie will definitely leave a poignant feeling in your heart.
