There is so much fun to be had in Guardians of the Galaxy that I am wondering why I was skeptical about the film when the trailers came out. Then again I remember why, since it is the exact same things that spoil the fun in the movie too.
The latest addition to Marvel's super hero universe, Guardians of the Galaxy is a throwback to the 80's era of cheezy sci-fi films that by today's standards are only worthy of warm nostalgia. What Marvel does is infuse this nostalgia with some kick ass new age 3D gimmicks and production quality to conjure up a decent looking film.
An interstellar orb is stolen from the bad man Ronan, by a band of extraterrestrial fighters lead by Peter Quill- a half human half alien himself. The cat and mouse game with the universe's existence at stake forms the rest of the story.
GOTG is not a regular Marvel film that we have come to expect of late. It is unusually light in tone, playful and takes itself lightly. A distinct comic book approach by director James adds charm to the cheesiness of the enterprise and one gleefully gives in to the laid back Chriss Pratt and his antics. What does the film in though is that it is overlong and at times too much is stuffed into the proceedings where it was the least needed. The director at times seems to desperate to prove to Marvel and us the audiences that this is a franchise in the making that's worth putting the moolah behind.
There are however too many plusses to offset the negatives here; the spectacular imagery for example. The scale at which galaxies and universe is depicted can put avengers to shame. In Imax 3D the effect and immersion just multiplies exponentially drawing you into the movie instantly.
Dazzling and crazy fun, GOTG is a delight for comic book and super hero genre lovers. It will also delight the newbies in the hall who are trying out such films for the first time. Go watch this for sure on the big screen, its worth the exorbitant imax prices.
