Liam Neeson has made a career over the past few years of playing the grizzled old guy with a violent past who's still kicking arse. So to see much of his latest movie, 'A Walk Among the Tombstones' bathed in the same light in the promotions can be a little off putting. However the movie is a completely different beast than his 'Taken' series and akin to something much more mature and fulfilling cinematically.

Neeson plays an ex-cop, Matthew Scudder, who's now an unlicensed private investigator. His latest assignment involves a man, Kenny (Dan Stevens), looking for the kidnappers and subsequent murderers of his wife. Kenny had paid the ransom but yet, his wife was chopped up into little pieces and delivered back to him. The catch here for Frank is, that Kenny's a drug dealer. Soon enough Frank discovers the duo behind the kidnappings and realises the moral dilemma their actions have thrown him into.

The themes of the movie are the type that will have you question your own stance on the equations of right and wrong after you've watched the movie. It's this very quality that sets it apart from most movies from the genre, turning it into something beyond the usual offerings. Neeson still gets to use a gun, threaten people over the phone and throw a mean punch or two but he's a very different character from his usual shtick. He has his demons to grapple with (an unfortunate shooting during his life as a cop) but he balances a sense of world weariness about him with wry humour. Dan Stevens as the husband, out for revenge but a chequered past himself, is excellent too, but it's Astro as Neeson's wannabe deputy who steals the show whenever he's onscreen.

If you like talky, intelligent, and mature fare along with your usual thriller elements then 'A Walk Among The Tombstones' should definitely be on your watching list this weekend. Don't miss this crackling thriller.
