To say that Indian films have come of age would be an understatement of the century. In the last few years Indian movie goers have proved that more than stars and glossy dance numbers, they want honest and unpretentious content. However, there are many hidden gems that didn’t get their deserved recognition or appreciation. With Oscars 2018 at our doorstep, these are 5 underappreciated Indian films that we think could have made us proud at the biggest celebration of cinemas in the world.AligarhIt is plain unfortunate how under rated this gem of a film is. Whether it’s the plot, the performance or the execution, there are very few movies that get the nuanced understanding of homosexual relationships and India’s reaction to it way this movie did. The movie would have been the perfect representative of changing narratives in Indian movies at the Oscars.DorThe movie probably came and went from the theatres without most of us noticing, and the only reason we know of this movies is because of the song ‘Yeh Honsla’. But the movie is definitely much more than that. This directorial venture by Nagesh Kukunoor is a sensitive portrayal of two women bonding over common tragedies in the backdrop of barren and rough Rajasthan. It is a cinematic and emotional experience that is difficult to explain words.Jaane Bhi Do YaroonThe movie was definitely light years ahead of its time, but even then it being a major flop is something that many movie lovers have a hard time digesting. This black comedy meets scathing satire is one of the finest examples of directorial and storytelling brilliance and would have definitely made India proud at the Oscars.I Am KalamI am Kalam managed to strike a balance that most movies get wrong. It was inspirational, relevant and substantial without being preachy and was thoroughly entertaining. The performance by child artist Harsh Mayar is something that has stuck with the few that watched the movie, forever. Again, it would have been a shining example of what Indian movies are truly capable of without being garish and mindlessly entertaining.Aankhon DekhiThis movie can be best described as sheer cinematic brilliance. It not only had a story that was unique, but the honesty with which it was made shines through in every frame. Sanjay Mishra giving perhaps his life’s best performance so far, is the biggest asset of the movie, part from its direction and screenplay. Had Aankhon Dekhi been to Oscars it would have received the respect it so convincingly deserved.

Bollywood determines our fashion, our travel destinations and much more. In fact there are very few aspects in life that Bollywood does not influence our choices in, including naming our babies. But given how the characters with names as such have ended up in their movies, you are better off not naming your kid after these popular Bollywood names.Zoya- Lover DiesWhat is the one common thread between films such as Jannat, Ishaqzaade, Raanjhnaa and Tiger Zinda Hai? All the movies had the hero dead in the end except for Salman in Tiger Zinda Hai but that is Salman, else who comes out from Syria alive after fighting with ISIS! But even here you have to agree that his life was in great danger. Now think of the other thing that is common between these films. All the girls were named Zoya. This is one unlucky heroine name whose hero dies or at least puts his life in great danger.Rahul- Bumpy Love LifeThis name has got to be the most Bollywood name ever. From Rahul in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Yess Boss, Dil To Pagal Hai apart from Shah Rukh Khan immortalizing the name, there is another thing common with all the Rahuls of Bollywood- they all have really bumpy and problematic love life. So no matter how much you love the name, don’t name your kid Rahul unless you want them to have a love life strife with serious issues, if you believe in Bollywood.Naina-Crappy menNainas of Bollywood has way of inviting crappy men into their lives. From Naina in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, to Naina in Kal Ho Naa Ho to Naina in Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani- one got ditched by the one whe was supposed to marry and kept on flirtring with her, one had the love of his life giving tips like ‘6 Din Ladki In’ and another was hopelessly in love with a commitment phobic philanderer. Nope, not nami ng my kid Naina either. They got to do something about their choice in men.Rohit- Hostile Girlfriend’s ParentsStop imagining Hrithik Roshan in all his glory every time he played a Rohit and think of this. Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, Aap Mujhe Lagen Lagey and even Koi Mill Gaya the Rohits have had to deal with reall hostile parents of his girlefriend. What is it about girls’ parents that they hate Rohits so much?Sonia- Damsels in DistressThis is one name you should actually not give to your daughter given how Sonias in Bollywood are always damsels in distress who end up in seriosly unfortunate events. Don’t believe us, try to remember a few Sonias of Bollywood. Bipasha in Race, Kajol in Karan Arjun, Priyanka in Aitraaz, I could go on and on, but I guess you get the drift.

The fringe group, Shri Rajput Karni Sena, is suddenly all over the news. They have grabbed headlines, but not in a very good way. They have caused a havoc and mayhem around the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat. Even while filming the movie, SLB was attacked by members of the group. When the initial release date was fixed on 1st December, the group made a huge hue and cry about the film over an alleged dream sequence that would show Allaudin Khalji and Padmavati romance. While the makers and the actors had clarified that no such sequence has been shot, the group refused to believe it!Shri Rajput Karni Sena has time and again created a ruckus around Padmaavat and has finally decided to watch the film when it will release on 25th January 2018. But this is not the only film that the group had a problem with. Here is a list of 3 other films and TV shows that did not go down well with the Karni Sena:1. Ashutosh Gowarikar's Jodhaa AkbarKarni Sena had initially said that the film had undermined Rajput valour. In fact, the objection that they raised was about a factual ambiguity on whether Jodha was Akbar's wife or his daughter-in-law. But the real reason for their protest was the fact that the film showed the marriage between two communities! Many states did protest against the film and many theatres in Rajasthan did not play the film.2. VeerThe Shri Rajput Karni Sena also opposed the Salman Khan film. According to them, the film had some dialogues that were "derogatory and demeaning for the Rajput community". They also said that the film maligned a brave community of the Rajputs. As a mark of their protest, they even vandalised a few cinema halls in Jaipur that showed the film.3. TV Show Jodhaa AkbarLike Ashutosh Gowarikar's film, the serial starring Rajat Tokas and Paridhi Sharma in the lead role also came under Karni Sena's radar. They demanded a ban on the show and also threatened the makers with public protests and legal action but Zee aired the show anyway.Additionally, the Karni Sena also staged a protest against Ekta Kapoor because she produced the show. They also attacked the Zee office in Jaipur and vandalised it. After Zee Media filed a complaint, the leader of the group, Lokendra Singh Kalvi, was arrested!Would their protests against Padmavati also turn futile like the rest? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavathas been at the center of all controversies from the very beginning of 2017. In fact, the sets of the film were vandalized and SLB was attacked in Rajasthan during the filming of the movie. When the initial release date of 1st December was decided,Karni Senamade a huge hue and cry about the film. In a desperate attempt to save the film, the makers decided to show the film to a few journalists even before it was sent to theCentral Board Of Film Certification. This resulted in the film getting delayed. The film has finally geared up for release on 25th January and the Supreme Court has also ordered to lift all state bans on the film. While there has been much anticipation about it even now, the makers once again held a special preview of the film for senior journalists in Delhi, this time with all the necessary permissions. He has given the film 4 stars and said:"He(Bhansali) has a splendid sense of narrating an epic tale, which is evident when you think of the gigantic scale of the film. The battle sequences are awe-inspiring and have been executed with magnificence...Ranveer Singh is stupendous and clearly in top form. He holds you attentive right from the first frame till the penultimate moments. The effortlessness with which he gets into the skin of the character is noteworthy. It must be said that this is his finest work to date. Deepika is enchanting as Padmavati and displays the strength as an actor in several pertinent episodes. She gave Career Best Performance ever. Shahid Kapoor Steals the Show all the way. He Nailed it !!! Loved his Romance with Deepika. Aditi Rao Hyderi will surprise you. Supporting Cast is Top Notch. On the whole, Padmaavat is a cinematic gem that you just cannot miss. Strongly recommended!"Will you watch the film? Let us know in the comments below!
