Back in 1990, Amitabh Bachchan had spearheaded one of the biggest Bollywood tours at overseas when he visited London. Titled Jumma Chumma In London, the concert was held at the prestigious Wembley stadium and was a runaway success. Soon enough, the concert was released as a documentary film and found some good popularity going for it, especially in the video circuits.Source: twitterNow almost three decades down the line, a similar experiment is being played out all over again, this time with IIFA as the backdrop. Held in New York last year, the event was a very good success and was attended by who’s who of the industry. However, instead of it being released as a documentary, there is a new kind of experiment being played out in the form of a film, Welcome To New York."That's right," says a source attached to the film, "For the first time ever there is a complete spin-off of the event by means of a feature film no less. Yes, the backdrop is that of the IIFA awards and there are quite a few scenes in the film that would feature the proceedings that took place during the event. However, to top it up all, there is a film which has been planned around these events."Directed by Chakri Toleti (who is making his Bollywood debut with this Vashu Bhagnani production), Welcome To New York tells the story of two commoners - Sonakshi Sinha and Diljit Dosanjh - who gain an opportunity to visit IIFA awards and mingle up, close and personal with the celebrity crowd. The show is hosted by Karan Johar and Riteish Deshmukh (who play themselves) with appearances by Sushant Singh Rajput, Lara Dutta, Boman Irani and Rana Daggubati as well. While there are gags and fun galore, twist in the tale comes when Karan Johar's (evil) twin brother Arjun comes into the scene."This is what makes Welcome To New York interesting because fact and fiction have been merged seamlessly into the narrative," our source continues, "So basically there are three narrative points. One is the real footage, second is the footage that is shot around the real Bollywood personalities and third is the footage which is shot with fictitious characters. It may all sound plain, simple and easy but believe me, it is not. There are a lot of factors involved here, both from writing as well as technical perspective, and you need to be really smart in your storytelling style to get it right."What is also quite important is to note that this is an altogether different genre been attempted and hence its success becomes all the more important."Bollywood hasn't really seen an event spinoff film like this," a veteran filmmaker comments, "You can well imagine that after Jumma Chumma In London, there has been no such affair. Still, despite the challenges involved, the makers have taken a step ahead and dared to put together something as drastically experimental as this."One of the major challenges involved was to let the audiences clearly understand what the film is actually all about."There was a quite some effort put into making the promo right," a technical crew member adds, "Jokes, humor, reality, fiction, songs, entertainment quotient - all of this had to be well integrated in those two and a half minutes so that audiences get a clear messaging around what Welcome To New York is all about. Thankfully, they seem to have caught on well to the point. It is time now for them to appreciate what the film has to offer as a whole."We would know as the film releases all over today.

Bollywood is irrefutably an industry of Box Office clashes. Of course with as many as hundreds of movies finding their way to theaters every year, there’s only so much 52 weeks can really accommodate. However we as audiences have sort of given definite names to iconic box office clashes. We never seem to go beyond Dil Vs Ghayal, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Vs Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Mohabbatein Vs Mission Kashmir and Lagaan Vs Gadar when it comes to powerful box office clashes. We didn’t think this was justified at all. Only a true Bollywood fan who never gave any movie a miss would know what we are talking about. While producers these days have become very aware and thoughtful about giving their movies the best possible release slot, things were not as quite as smooth back in the 90s. So that’s what we are going to talk about today!Did you know Hum Aapke Hain Koun wasn’t really a solo release? The film clashed with Ajay Devgn’s Vijaypath which also by the way was a box office hit. So here are 18 of those high voltage box office clashes of the 90s that no one talks about:5THAug 1994Hum Aapke Hain Koun Vs VijaypathWinner: Hum Aapke Hain Koun! While HAHK was possibly the biggest ensemble of the time, Vijaypath was a high octane action movie that starred Ajay Devgn.21stJan 1994Raja Babu Vs ElaanWinner: Raja BabuStarring Akshay Kumar and Amrish Puri in the lead, Elaan was in fact a better opener before Raja Babu completely took over4thNov 1994Suhaag Vs Andaz Apna ApnaWinner: SuhaagAs surprising as it really is, Andaz Apna Apna was badly marketed and released in parts all across the country. However, Suhaag starring Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn picked up and ended up being a hit.1stDecember 1995Ram Jaane Vs Akele Hum Akele TumWinner: Ram JaaneShah Rukh Vs Aamir was any day going to be a big clash and Akele Hum Akele Tum had quite a few expectations set. Although, it was King Khan who had the last laugh!26thJan 1996Bandit Queen Vs English Babu Desi MamWinner: Bandit QueenBandit Queen also clashed with an SRK starrer but the actor couldn’t fight against the might of this realistic drama.31STOctober 1997Dil To Pagal Hai Vs Ghulam-E-MustafaWinner: Dil To Pagal Hai (Both Hits)Despite the latter also being a hit, we know which was really the bigger hit. However with two movies of different genres presented to viewers, it was a bountiful week at the box office.28thFeb 1997Judaai Vs AuzaarWinner: JudaaiThe coming together of Salman and Sanjay Kapoor under the direction of Sohail Khan wasn’t enough. The winner in this equation was the Sri Devi led Judaai.10THOct 1997Deewana Mastana Vs Mr. & Mrs. KhiladiWinner: Deewana MastanaWhile both movies were directed by David Dhawan, the latter despite being quite popular back in the day couldn’t quite live up to the hype. It was the Govinda-Anil Kapoor starrer once again that won the battle.7thFeb 1997Judwaa Vs YeshwantWinner: JudwaaYet another instance of a mainstream action comedy winning over a realistic cop drama, this battle wasn’t much of a surprise!19thDec 1997Chachi 420 Vs AflatoonWinner: Chachi 420Kamal Haasan handsomely beat Akshay Kumar and Chachi 420 became one of the most loved movies of the year.24thJuly 1998Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha Vs AngaareyWinner: Pyaar Toh Hona Hi ThaWhile Ajay had found his feet in action, he chose his romance to clash with yet another Akshay Kumar starrer action movie. Alas, Akshay had to concede yet again.13thAug 1999Taal Vs KohramWinner: TaalOne of those weeks when viewers were presented two very different choices to choose from and they almost chose both. It was the Subhash Ghai starrer though that earned way more.22ndJan 1999Aa Ab Laut Chalein Vs Hu Tu TuWinner: None (Both Flops)While Aa Ab Laut Chalein did show some promise in the beginning, it just couldn’t use it to its advantage. The film clashed with the Suniel Shetty starrer but that didn’t change anything as both ended up being flops.24thSeptember 1999Dil Kya Kare Vs Hum Tum Pe Marte HainWinner: None (Both Flops)Despite both the movies flopping at box office, the viewers at large didn’t seem too upset with the content of both of them. The two movies did find some viewing on satellite later.5thNov 1999Hum Sath Sath Hain Vs ShoolWinner: Hum Sath Sath HainThere isn’t any surprise to see HSSH winning the battle hands down but the good part was Shool not going down the drain completely unnoticed.10thSeptember 1999Hello Brother Vs 1947 EarthWinner: None (Both Flops)Salman Vs Aamir you think would have been a big deal but it really wasn’t. While Hello Brother was completely commercial in appeal, it still had to get a cold shoulder from the viewers. The latter was just meant to appease the critics back in the day it seemed.11thAug 2000Dhadkan Vs DeewaneWinner: DhadkanBoth movies of the same genre and this time Akshay Kumar didn’t lose. Even though Dhadkan didn’t become a huge hit of all prospects, it still was way better than Deewane starring Ajay Devgn.29thDecember 2000Raju Chacha Vs Khiladi 420Winner: None (Both Flops)This one was one of the most talked about clashes of the year for it involved two of the most expensive movies of the time. While Akshay’s stunts had stirred a raging fire in the masses, Raju Chacha’s budget also made a lot of talking. As ironic as it may sound, both the movies ended up being disasters at the box office. Clearly the millennium didn’t end on a high!PS: All release dates have been cited based on data available on the internet. Some of the release dates may differ from different sources since all movies didn’t get extensive releases straightaway.Brought some memories back? You let us know meanwhile if we have missed out on any major clash of the time.

It’s a familiar sight to see the most anticipated movie of the year ending up being amongst top earners if not the highest one. Of course with a movie high on star power, grandeur, budget and banner is usually a money spinner. While most calendar years in the last decade and a half have sprung no surprise in terms of highest grossing movies, 90s is when audiences didn’t shy away from giving any movie a chance. And it’s a healthy sight really to see movies of different genres not depending on the cast or the production house making a mark amid the superfluity of biggies. When Ajay Devgn-Kajol’s Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha hit the screens in 1998, no one really gave that movie a chance. While Ajay had made a rare move out of his comfortable territory of action, the film wasn’t a big opener either. However, not only did the film become a super hit but also ended up being the second highest grossing film of the year.So here are 8 of those similar unexpected Bollywood movies that were amongst the top grossers of their respective years:Krantiveer – 1994Box Office - 11 Crores – Blockbuster3rd Highest Grosser of the yearWhile it may have become a cult classic today, we all know this Nana Patekar starrer wasn’t expected to turn out this well at the box office. While most of the biggies that released this year fell flat, Krantiveer was a blockbuster. Quite unexpected!Raja – 1995Box Office – 22 Crores – Blockbuster3rdHighest Grosser of the yearSanjay Kapoor didn’t entrench any mark whatsoever in his first box office outing Prem. Despite Madhuri on the cast board as the female lead, there wasn’t much associated with Raja and yet the film became a blockbuster.Agni Sakshi – 1996Box Office – 20 Crores – Blockbuster2ndHighest Grosser of the yearThese were times when family audiences alone had the potential to turn any movie into a blockbuster. With that section of viewers giving a thumbs up to this love triangle, Agni Sakshi became the second highest grosser of the year.Ziddi – 1997Box Office – 19 Crores – Super Hit5thHighest Grosser of the yearWhile it was always difficult to keep Sunny Deol out of the game, Ziddi wasn’t a film anyone expected to set the cash registers on fire. As it turns out, the film made its entry into the top 5 highest grossing films of the year.Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha – 1998Box Office – 23 Crores – Super Hit2ndHighest Grosser of the yearJust like we said, Ajay experimented by getting out of his comfortable zone of action and not many had put their moneys on this one. The Anees Bazmee directorial as it turns out was the second highest grossing movie of the year behind Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.Taal – 1999Box Office – 22 Crores – Hit4thHighest Grosser of the yearWhile Taal had the makings of a big celluloid experience owing to the brand of Subhash Ghai, the content however wasn’t warranting figures as huge as these. The big success of the film came as a surprise.Indian – 2001Box Office – 25 Crores – Hit4THHighest Grosser of the yearSunny Deol in action once again and Indian became the 4thhighest grossing film of the year. Trade Pundits from all across the country were only optimistic about Gadar: Ek Prem Katha writing off this one, but Indian did put up a very impressive tally.Raaz – 2002Box Office – 22 Crores – Blockbuster2ndHighest Grosser of the year2002 is anyway a forgettable year for Bollywood with just two official hits. While Devdas took the top slot, the second position was unexpectedly occupied by Raaz. Two new faces in a horror Bollywood story is not the making of a 25 crore earner but this Vikram Bhatt directorial defied most theories. The trends have changed so much today!

It’s folding up! The shoot of what can only be measured as India’s biggest presentation on celluloid in the modern era, Thugs of Hindostan will soon be entering the last leg of its production. Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the big ticket Yashraj film has kept everyone on tenterhooks ever since its announcement. And now that the film is heading towards a wrap soon, a lot of other elements are coming into play. While the coming together of Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan is itself a reason big enough for any Bollywood fan to make a theater visit, the box office prospects of this film have started making trade pundits ponder. In our view, the film is certain to create the 400 crore club in the country that no Bollywood movie holds the credit for so far.Yes, the dubbed Hindi version of Baahubali 2 did go berserk and made an insane 511 crores, but it wasn’t an original Bollywood presentation at large. So let’s discuss 5 reasons why Thugs of Hindostan will open the 400 crore club for Bollywood:Bachchan-Aamir CollaborationWith the coming together of the most trusted box office star and the biggest actor this millennium has seen, it’s difficult to predict the hurricane box office will get hit by. The collective fan base of these two stars will alone be enough to guarantee monumental box office prospects. The film also stars Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Sheikh in key roles. So while there’s that, can you possibly think of a bigger star cast than Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan together? Most Expensive Bollywood MovieWith an estimated budget of 210 crores, Thugs of Hindostan may turn out to be the most expensive Bollywood movie of all time. Based on Philip Meadows Taylor’s period novel Confessions of a Thug, the film is laced with extreme visual effects and majestic setting. It’s quite safe to assume the film will be grand in its story telling and hence the expected box office performance. It’s a Diwali ReleaseHaving booked the biggest available release slot of the year in the looks of Diwali, Thugs of Hindostan will certainly cash in on the occasion. Diwali has had a history of producing some of the biggest box office performers and this one will certainly eye to make it big. The Aditya Chopra production is set to release on November 7th.Records Speak For ThemselvesWith Aamir Khan holding the honor of being credited with top two highest grossing movies of all time in the looks of Dangal and PK, it’s pretty safe to assume Thugs will looks to surpass both of them. Dangal in fact had almost opened the 400 crore club last year when it made a lifetime domestic biz of 387 crores while PK as Christmas 2014 release had made 340. Aamir in the last decade has delivered highest grossing movies of five times including Ghajini, 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3, PK and Dangal. With him bettering his record each time, it’s a safe bet to conclude Thugs is opening the 400 crore club for us. The last time he and filmmaker Victor Acharya collaborated, they brought us the record breaking Dhoom 3.Thugs of Hindostan is an Epic Period Action AdventureBollywood has rarely been treated with a movie of this genre and it could not have asked for any other team but this to put things underway. While ably handled period movies like Padmaavat, Baahubali and Bajirao Mastani have done exceptionally well in the recent past, this one adds more value with action, adventure treasuring the prospects. The film is currently being shot in Malta and parts of Thailand. So are you convinced the film is creating the 400 crore club for Bollywood? It might even cross 500 if you ask us.

He has the ability to become his characters, but it has been with Sanjay Leela Bhansali that we have seen the most talented side of the actor. In his latest film Padmaavat, he has played a negative role and has aced it. In fact, he has stolen the show from his co-stars Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor. The film has faced quite some controversy and has not yet released in a few states. Despite that, the film opened to good numbers. but could it be one of the TOP 5 Box-Office openers for Ranveer? Well, check out the list:#5 Dil Dhadakne DoThe Zoya Akhtar film had got mixed reviews but was loved by most. People were excited to see him back again with Anushka Sharma after Band Baaja Baarat. On the very first day, it earned 10,5 crores at the Box-Office.#4 Bajirao MastaniBefore Padmaavat, people had unanimously felt that Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani was one of the best films of Ranveer Singh. Ranveer essayed the role of Bajirao Peshwa and he was near perfect in his portrayal. The film opened to 12.8 crores at the Box -Office.#3 Ram-LeelaThis SLB gave us Ranveer-Deepika and their magical chemistry. In fact, the duo is said to have started dating post the film. When filming began almost a year ago, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus, Padmavati, was expected to be the biggest, most successful release of 2017. But an unforeseen rage against the film from several fringe organisations delayed the film’s release to January 25, 2018, forced Bhansali to change its name to Padmaavat and effectively banned the film in as many as four states.Even Bollywood gurus were less than hopeful that the film would register healthy footfall upon its eventual release amid the fear of violence. However, none of this spelt doom for the film’s success. Padmaavat, made on a budget of Rs 180 crore, has raked in Rs 56 crore in just three days since of release.Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted second day figures on Saturday. “#Padmaavat has a HUMONGOUS Day 2... Had it been a smooth release [some states are not screening the film], the all-India biz would’ve touched Rs 40 cr... Wed 5 cr, Thu 19 cr, Fri 32 cr. Total: Rs 56 cr. India biz… SUPERB!,” he wrote in his tweet. The film’s lead star, Deepika Padukone also reacted to the box office numbers with a ‘boom.’ “It’s never happened before...I cannot even begin to express how happy & proud this makes me feel!!!Thank You for all the love,” she wrote in another tweet.Padmaavat, which stars Deepika as Rani Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji, tells the story of the latter’s conquest of Chittor upon falling for the queen’s beauty. The film received tremendous flak due to rumours of a dream sequence between the sultan and the queen, ‘misrepresentation of history’ and ‘disrespect towards the Rajput community’.Outfits such as the Karni Sena and the All India Brajmandal Kshatriya Rajput Mahasabha put bounties on the actor and director’s heads and asked for a nationwide ban on the film. Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh state governments had also installed a ban on the film until the Supreme Court called it illegal in a ruling. Even then, theatre associations refused to screen the film in the four states. In the rest of the states across the country, the film opened to lukewarm critical reviews but a positive reception among the viewers. Most theatres in Delhi, Mumbai and other cities saw heavy police security after a school bus was attacked in Gurugram a day before the film’s release.

Padmaavat has finally released and Bollywood must indeed be heaving a sigh of relief. After all, there has been so much ruckus created amongst countless other Bollywood releases due to the uncertainty that had prevailed around the ultimate arrival of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film.Let's take a look at how numerous films had to change their plans due to Padmaavat.Fukrey Returns - 8th DecemberThis is actually the only film that benefited from the delay of Padmaavat. It was going through a certain change in plans since Padmaavat was earlier slated for 1st December release. However, once word spread that the Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh-Shahid Kapoor film would be stepping into 2018, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani decided to make the most of it. Result? The film had a clear run till Tiger Zinda Hai.PadMan - 9th FebruaryThe film was always slated for Republic Day weekend arrival. In fact even after Padmaavat announced its decision to arrive on the same weekend, the film kept its stance intact. However, later when Sanjay Leela Bhansali personally requested Akshay Kumar to allow Padmaavat a clear release, the superstar decided to move the film ahead to 9th February in an act of solidarity. It now has to extend its promotion further.Aiyaary - 9th FebruaryIn the midst of biggies like Padmaavat and PadMan, it was Aiyaary which had to pick and choose its opponent for the clash. It took a safer (and wiser) route by opting out of Republic Day weekend arrival and picked 9th February. However, now it is again finding itself in a clash situation since PadMan has moved ahead to the same date. Result? PadMan v/s Aiyaary clash is now inevitable despite efforts made to avoid it.Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety - 23rd FebruarySonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety was earlier slated to release on 9th February since that would have given it an advantage of footfalls from the youth on Valentine's Day [14th February]. However, once it realized that PadMan, as well as Aiyaary, were releasing on 9th February due to confirmed plans of Padmaavat, it pronto decided to move ahead by a couple of weeks. A good decision as the makers didn't let ego in way of commerce.Parmanu - The Story of Pokhran - 2nd MarchThe John Abraham starrer had its eyes set on 23rd February. Even though this translated into a clash with Rani Mukherjee's Hichki, the makers were not worried (and rightly so) since both films belong to a different genre. However, with Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety getting pushed to this date, there was too much of a crowd that had started gathering. The film has now been pushed ahead by a week, which makes sense.Pari - 2nd MarchThe Anushka Sharma starrer was earlier slated for release in February but then with too much of re-jig around the release of other films (a Padmaavat effect of course), it decided to arrive on 2nd March. One waits to see though if this date is eventually met since Parmanu has been confirmed for 2nd March too. Considering the fact that both films are backed by KriArj, it is unlikely that the two films will clash.Drive - Date to be decidedSushant Singh Rajput and Jacqueline Fernandez have come together for Karan Johar and Tarun Mansukhani's Drive. The film was aiming for Holi release of 2nd March. However, with quite a few films from January and February getting pushed, Drive would be requiring a 'drive ahead' as well. It is also being said certain post-production activities need to be completed and hence makers require more time.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavathas been at the center of all controversies from the very beginning of 2017. In fact, the sets of the film were vandalized and SLB was attacked in Rajasthan during the filming of the movie. When the initial release date of 1st December was decided,Karni Senamade a huge hue and cry about the film. In a desperate attempt to save the film, the makers decided to show the film to a few journalists even before it was sent to theCentral Board Of Film Certification. This resulted in the film getting delayed. The film has finally geared up for release on 25th January and the Supreme Court has also ordered to lift all state bans on the film. While there has been much anticipation about it even now, the makers once again held a special preview of the film for senior journalists in Delhi, this time with all the necessary permissions. The verdict from the journalists are out and here is what they had to say:Vasudha Venugopal from Economic Times said:This is what Namita Joshi from Navbharat Times commented:Hindustan Times' Sonal Kalra said:Anant Vijay from Jagran said:The reviews are highly positive. We just hope that these reviews can infuse some sense to the Karni Sena!In fact, Umair Sandhu from UAE has also watched the film and he has found it to be SLB's most ambitious project till date. He has given the film 4 stars and said:"He(Bhansali) has a splendid sense of narrating an epic tale, which is evident when you think of the gigantic scale of the film. The battle sequences are awe-inspiring and have been executed with magnificence...Ranveer Singh is stupendous and clearly in top form. He holds you attentive right from the first frame till the penultimate moments. The effortlessness with which he gets into the skin of the character is noteworthy. It must be said that this is his finest work to date. Deepika is enchanting as Padmavati and displays the strength as an actor in several pertinent episodes. She gave Career Best Performance ever. Shahid Kapoor Steals the Show all the way. He Nailed it !!! Loved his Romance with Deepika. Aditi Rao Hyderi will surprise you. Supporting Cast is Top Notch. On the whole, Padmaavat is a cinematic gem that you just cannot miss. Tremendous performances, deft direction, power-packed screenwriting and dialogue, melodious soundtrack and of course, the lavish mounting — this film has it all. Strongly recommended!"Will you watch the film? Let us know in the comments below!
