Is everything in Bollywood a fluke or do formulas actually work? It is a riddle that every filmmaker, actor, and producer has been trying to solve for ages While things are indeed dynamic in Bollywood and it is difficult to tell what will work and what won't, there actually seems to be certain tried and tested formulas that yield results.
Whether it is riding the bandwagon of biopics or the herd mentality with which sequels are made, there really seems to be a place for formula-driven films in Bollywood. However, at the end of the day, Bollywood marries art with commerce, a combination whose result can always swing in any direction. While going the tried and tested route is often safe, here are a few films that defied the notion. Despite heavily following the winning formulas, here are some movies that proved a hit formula does not always guarantee a hit film.

Period Dramas
With Padmaavat making headlines, period films have become a hit formula. However, Kalank proved that it takes more than a big star cast, gorgeous costumes and elaborate sets to make a period film work.

Sequels
Like every year, there were many sequels in 2018 and there will be more of them in 2019, because sequels have a great shot at winning the box-office and it is proven. But looks like sequels are no more the safest bets as even Salman Khan could not salvage Race 3. We do not even want to talk about Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3, Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se or Happy Phirr Bhaag Jayegi!
