Akshay Kumar has almost become a poster boy for Republic/ Independence Day releases. For the past few years, Akshay Kumar has taken up all the Independence Day and Republic Day slots to release his films. These films almost always have a patriotic undertone as well. But this has not been a new formula. Akshay's first Independence Day release was back in 2000 and till 2015, not a single of his Independence Week release was a hit.
Is this making you scratch your head? Well, worry not. Check out the list of all of Akshay Kumar's Independence Day releases and their box-office verdict:
- 1/7
Dhadkan (2000)
This Akshay Kumar film marked his first Independence Day release. Releasing on the Independence Day weekend, the film could not become a hit. But Dhadkan, which also starred Suniel Shetty and Shilpa Shetty, made decent collection and even though it was not a hit, it was Average.
- 2/7
Jaani Dushaman: Ek Anokhi Kahaani (2002)
If you have, by any chance, watched this supernatural/ rebirth film, we are pretty sure you would know what the box office verdict for this one would be. A snooze fest of a film also starring Manisha Koirala, Suniel Shetty, Sunny Deol and Sonu Nigam, this one was a major flop.
- 3/7
Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara (2013)
This 2013 film had much hype around it. The sequel to Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, people flocked in the theatre on the first weekend, also because it was a major Independence Day release. But the film couldn't please the masses and it was declared a flop.
- 4/7
Brothers (2015)
With Sidharth Malhotra, Jacqueline Fernandez and an item number by Kareena Kapoor Khan and Akshay in an action -packed role, what could possibly go wrong? Well, the story. Audiences rejected this one too and this film was a flop as well
- 5/7
Rustom (2016)
This film changed the fate of Akshay Kumar, once and forever we believe. Not just did Rustom make Akshay Kumar synonymous to Independence Day, but also gave him his first National Award. After this superhit movie, none of Akki's Independence Day release was a flop!
- 6/7
Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017)
The film, based on a real life story and co- starring Bhumi Peene kar, was a hit.
- 7/7
Gold (2018)
The fiction meets reality story of India's first win at the Hockey World Cup was an inspiring roller coaster journey. Also marking Mouni Roy's debut, the film was a hit and was also Akshay's highest opener till Kesari released.
