Lara Jean Covey has the most perfect boyfriend in Peter Kavinsky but together their happily ever after doesn’t quite pan out to their expectations. The romantic comedy’s third and final installment To All The Boys: Always And Forever is here determine whether they will even have one.
The franchise started out with a fake high school relationship turning out into something real. The third installment where this dreamy couple decides go to collage 3000 miles apart from each other does give them a lot to think about but do Lara Jean and Peter have what it takes to stand the test of distance?
Well, for starters they don’t even have a meet cute, or their own song – some very real issues for Lana Conder’s Lara Jean – but they do have plan to study in Stanford together and never saying good night. Things come crashing down as she fails to get into Stanford and to make matters worse for her romantic life falls in love with New York with NYU waiting for her with doors open.
While the dilemma seems enough fodder for an epic romantic screenplay with enough road bumps for Lara Jean and Peter to get over, on screen things really fall flat. For all intents and purposes the second installment of this Netflix franchise, To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You seemed like an appropriate end to this romantic saga, post which there seems not a lot left to say for how deeply connected the lead pair of the film is.
The crackling chemistry that Lana Condor and Noah Centineo have shared through the first two films seems to have completely burnt out. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still all lot of sap felt over from where the first two films came from, after all, it’s Lara Jean’s love story, but no heart fluttering moments which will make this pre-Valentine watch worth it. In fact, dear Lara Jean’s letter writing skills have hit a snag too.
There are perfect dates, there’s nothing more this couple wants than to be together forever and be hopelessly in love, but hey, you established that the first two times right? What’s more?
The total heartburn and the nearly 2 hour long screenplay could have been the subject matter of one tiny conversation which won’t just be favour to them but the fans too. All the fun high school stuff has totally been zapped out too. For once the entire batch seems to be getting along perfectly and already where they need be from start to finish.
To All The Boys: Always And Forever could have been a better send off to the characters who have been loved through the franchise. The movie is dull and uneventful and so far the least romantic outing from the makers mostly because it leans on predictability.
If you are fan of the franchise that three years ago made romance fanatics swoony again then you’d rather stick to the fluttery ending of the second film because you’d not be missing much in the Lara Jean-Peter story by skipping this one entirely.
