The film chronicles the life of Swami Vivekanada and his journey to find enlightenment.

“The Light: Swami Vivekananda is an honest film with good intentions. Even though the writing and execution is not upto the mark, it is a one time watch.”

The trouble with biopics like "The Light" is that you can tell that the makers heart is in the right place...such an earnest effort this; but not all good intentions translate into good cinema. I dont think The Light would have benefited if (as some may suugest in its defence) some big money had been pumped into it. Yes the lack of production values does get to you, but not more than the linear approach where the director just plods away at the script.

I will not start with the potrayal of the Other whether it is the Swami's colleagues in the South or the Alif Lailaesque heartland of India or how strange it seems that in the 1800s everyone in the US speaks with an East Euroepan accent and dresses up in JC Penney. The film, the questions it raises, the characters that cross the Swami's life will make you go back to the library and read some more about Vivekanada's life and just for this one should give the movie some credit for the conversations it will begin. And as one member of the audience pointed out, for so long they have only been reading about the Swami in pamphlets, it was a treat to watch his life on screen now.
