MASAAN revolves around four lives intersecting along the Ganges: a low caste boy hopelessly in love, a young woman ridden with guilt of a sexual encounter ending in a tragedy, a hapless father with a fading morality, and a spirited child yearning for a family- as they try to escape the moral constructs of small-town India.

“ Masaan is a film that comes once in a lifetime, don't miss it!”

Masaan is a difficult film to write about, Masaan is the easiest film to recommend in so many years. There is none of the defensive Well I Liked It or the half hearted Why Don't YOU Watch It And Tell Me How It Is or an outright Ba'ad Mai Mujh Se Ticket Ke Paisa Na Maangna. But when you begin to write about it, you start to dither.. Nervous that you will pin down the gossamer wings of it's moment by your clunky words.
Thoughts as I watch this film. No Good Comes Out Of Having Sex In India... or self deprecating black humour to that effect as the opening moments has a surreptious rendezvous that goes terribly wrong. Its then that you note how lucky we are to have Richa Chadda who gets small town India's grit and vulnerability down pat. Her character Devi doesn't shy of reaching out, of realising that there is a world out there, of being angry and being aware of the chicken coop from Adiga's WHITE TIGER. Remember Adiga on his 'hundred of pale hens and brightly colored roosters, stuffed tightly into wire-mesh cages. They see the organs of their brothers lying around them. They know they are next, yet they cannot rebel. They do not try to get out of the coop.'

Thats also the other protagonist in this tale set in Benares. Deepak. Deepak who is studying to be an engineer and has grown up Dom. Deepak who explains patiently to a family that only knows an India where caste clips your wings or where you pay to get a "pakki sarkari naukri".

Two characters who are ready to flee the coop.

Until Love, Sex and how do we put it waqt and dandey wali sarkar ka Dhokha happens to them.

The Ganga figures as the other character in the film, whether its the Ganga as a social map and Deepak's outburst as an effervescent Shalu is quizzing him about his home. The Ganga and parallel economies as the river turns a site where you take a wager.. and a story arc that covers the relationship between Sanjay Mishra and the sprightly Jhontu.

And the river when the sun descends and spools on social anthropology unfurl in a haze of ganja and cheap alcohol. The river will keep it's secrets as lovers steal furtive kisses or shed angry tears and trust it with its guilt.
There is something about Masaan that reminds me of Mistry's A Fine Balance. Everyone has a story. The smarmy police officer that is blackmailing the father daughter will bring his daughter to work 'of threatening a father'. Chalo Bitya.

There are so many vignettes popping up in this film. Verily, a veritable Ganga. The use of Qayamat Se Qaymat Tak's Ghazab Ka Hai Din which strikes nostalgic cheer and a fear of how things can go rapidly wrong in the same chord. Devi's angst at never escaping the city and that brief moment when she holds the power as city slickers beg her for a train seat out. The kindly Sadhya Ji who may just be another shackle to hold Devi down. And all those other moments that you will discover as you watch and repeat watch this film again. It's said that one needs to visit Sangam ( Allahabad) twice, as one character confides in the film. Masaan needs to be revisited many times more.
