Mausam is the knotty tale of Harry and Aayat who develop adolescent love in an Indian summer, go through a change of season with turmoil in their relationship, and meet again in the Scottish spring. Just when things seem upbeat, hostile situations separate Harry and Aayat again. Harry (now an Air force commander) must choose ...more

“The film kicks off beautifully but after a point, loses its momentum mainly because of Pankaj Kapur's weak direction and average performances by the leads. Keeping your expectations low might help before watching this one.”

By the time end credits roll on screen, one can't but help being disappointed by Pankaj Kapoor's directorial debut Mausam. What begins as an engaging sweet love story plummets into mediocrity and leaves a very bad aftertaste.

The story of two lovers separated and then reunited only to be torn between their love the nation and love for each other, Mausam is in many ways Hum Dono meets Dear John. Yet, it doesn't have the flourish of either films. The film begins beautifully, with strong supporting characters and endearingly set sequences. It is in the later half that the film gets melodramatic and veers into the implausible.

The other big problem with Mausam is the lead pair and the way they are handled. Shahid is good as the guy next door, but once he dons the pilot's mantle, all he does is sink in his cheeks, grow a mush and put on a permanent grouchy face in the name of acting. Sonam is all grace and effervescence as the simple girl and predictably fails to deliver when the story demands. The combination is good, the chemistry evident, yet under utilized by the director.

One expected a lot from Pankaj Kapoor, a doyen of hindi cinema. While Mausam is not entirely a washout (it has it's brilliant moments here and there), overall it doesn't go beyond the mundane. Watch it without any expectations and you might just find it passable.
