Ten minutes into the movie the 'aspiring' (Aamir keliye film likh rahe hain bus Aamir se meeting hojaaye) writers two (Dulaal--'some friends call me Red' and Mainak--mountain peak? flying mountain? or words to that effect) are cajoling a security guard for THE Chopras to the whereabouts of Bollywood's paterfamilias; this while a show reel chronicling their tragi-comic attempts to get a foot into the hallowed portals of Bollywood plays. There are cameos by Mahesh Bhatt, Amrita Rao , Anil Sharma with friendly appearance of their grandiose gyaan. Aditya? the two ask of the Chopra's guard, and then a hesitant "Uday ji hain?" as parting shot. Karna padta hai. Kehna padta hai. You know then how things are going to unfold for them but somehow you can afford to be self indulgent about them and the film for it is so earnest. Sulemani Keeda is the kind of film where the movie usher's ubiquitous "Kuch meal order karenge, Ma'am" is irritating. Getting in the way of your film watching; rather than an exit clause to escape the banality unfolding on screen by drowning your sorrows in a box of complex carbohydrates instead. Sulemani Keeda introduces us to the Gonzo and Sweety Kapoors of our world where a "35 year old playing 18" IS thinking out of the box, and to the idea of beards as brand conflict. Reminding us of the Pokhriyals in our lives with their pragmatism "Palang Todo Qalm Nahi",and that our book and CD collections remain the Crime Scene Investigation sites of our souls. There is also the intriguing Ruma who will be the Yoko to the Odd Couple/Jai Veeru/John Lennon McCartney/Saleem Javed story; you cant help falling in love with her just a little bit and hoping just a little bit more for Dulaal's story to have a filmy ending. The Mainaks of the world will be all right.
