That Girl in Yellow Boots is a thriller tracing Ruth's (Kalki Koechlin) search for her father - a man she hardly knew but cannot forget. Desperation drives her to work without a permit, at a massage parlour. Torn between several schisms, Mumbai becomes the alien but yet strangely familiar backdrop for Ruth's quest. She strugg...more

“The film is emotionally overwhelming, full of twists, and keeps you on the edge. Though it gets a little stretched, it’s definitely worth a onetime watch, especially if you are a fan of experimental cinema, Kalki and Kashyap's previous works.”

Does it mean the script failed since I came out of the theatre thinking more about two performances that were not lead roles but entertained and engaged me the most in the film? The two performances that were the highlight for me were by Puja Sarup & Gulashan Deviah.

Whats it about? Its about Ruth (Kalki Koechlin) who works in a massage parlor and gives handshakes for Rs. 1000/- but it is not a Chandni bar version of a massage parlor girl. She is in fact searching for her father. So its about her search and how she meets different characters and goes through different situations in that search.

Does it work for me Yes.

Why? - Like I said in the beginning the performances of Gulshan Deviah as Chittiappah & Puja Sarup as Maya were the high points of the film. Most of the time I was waiting for them to be on screen and because of that cared less for Ruths search or the turmoil she is going through in her life. Dont know if it is a failure for Anurag Kashyap as a filmmaker that his actors rose above the central character or he structured it that way. Puja Sarup's role and performance reminded me of Namrata Rao's performance as the store girl in LSD.

What works for me in an Anurag Kashyap film are the quirky characters he creates and the way he designs some fresh scenes like the remote scene - which is the highlight scene of the film & also the scene between Kalki & Gulshan in the parlor. My respect for Kalki as an actor grew after I watched her in the play called the Skeleton Woman so this performance adds one more layer to it. Even Prashant Prakash is fantastic as her boyfriend. What fucked up the experience for me was the casting of the character of Ruths father. That actor and the role worked like anticlimax for an otherwise engaging and delightful watch.

Final few words: That girl in yellow boots is Anurag Kashyap doing a Steven Soderberg that is making a small intimate digital independent film before going out & making his big budget Bombay Velvet.

Rating: ***

Ticket Meter: Worth any amount of money if you starve for some interesting cinema.
