Internal Bias: I love Gul Panag. I find her sassy, smart and very charming

Turning 30 is a totally metro movie set in Mumbai (Thank God!). It was refreshing (and oddly relieving) to find characters that talked like us in an English Hindi mix with no accent, dressed like us, had our kind of birthday parties and led our kind of life, right down to the maid who mothers all single people. (I wonder why, when they come to a married household the help turns nasty!).

The story is about the life and times of Naina, an ad professional who turns 30 without a boyfriend and in a bad job. There are also two sidetracks about her best pals which segue completely into the main story.

The 3 girls Gul Panag,Tillotama Shome and Jeneva Talwar share a terrific chemistry. Everything about them is so natural that you feel you are in the room with them sharing their story. The guys-Purab Kohli as the old boyfriend come back and Sid Makker as the guy who dumps her are again perfectly at ease in their roles. Even the other friends and colleagues strike a real note. Ok, I better stop gushing on the reality bit. I guess you get the point.

The songs are quite good too. I liked Jiya nahi jeena quite a bit though I think the others may grow on you after a few hearings.

My only quibble is with the length. Post interval the narration sags a bit and the story meanders aimlessly before finding its feet again. You find your attention wandering as we are treated once again to the heroine breaking down or sleeping glumly on her couch. Since the story is more slice of life than drama, it runs the risk of getting boring and almost does till the Director I think woke up to the fact that she was creating more atmosphere than action and got on with it.

Overall, a great watch. I recommend it.
