Over the last few years, Anurag Kashyap has become a brand of sorts, giving rise to scores of filmmakers & cinema aficionados who come out in support of him, hence I never trust tweet reviews for his work. This time though, his film took a long time coming to cinemas, with the release being pushed twice. The first trailer had me, while the 2nd didnt work for me, so I actually went in blank, not knowing what to expect. What was the outcome?

I was blown away by what one can call the most mature Anurag Kashyap film to come out to date.

1. The actors. Name them and they are all fantastic.Rahul Bhatt - great comeback, Ronit Roy - typecast but firing on all cylinders, Siddhant - fantastic, Vineet Singh - Solid

2. Girish Kulkarni. Take a bow Sir, for you have pulled off, in my opinion, the most memorable on-screen officer I have ever seen.

3. Dark humour, which the film is heavily laced with, allowing for some much needed humour in the otherwise dark film.

4. How real he keeps it.

5. A disturbinly chilling end, which leaves you speechless.

1. A bit self-indulgent at times, but then thats Anurag Kashyap.

2. Could be shorter by 10-15 minutes.

3. Gets too dark sometimes, almost sadistic, making you wonder if we are all this Ugly.

To sum it up, Ugly is brilliant. A dark mirror to the society we live in, it shows us that everyone has a devil inside, sadly though, there are only devils in this film, making it a bit difficult to digest at the end of it.

Even though its a festive time, I would strongly reccomend everyone to watch this riveting drama/thriller. The scene between the cop & Rahul Bhatt at the start for the film, is by a mile, the best scene in a hindi movie I have seen this year. That alone is worth the ticket.
