Verdict - A Fun Filled Roller Coaster That Could Have Ended Well!

Meri Pyaari BinduWatch trailerRelease date : May 12, 2017

Bengali crew, Bengali cast, a lot of quintessential Calcutta elements along with a fun filled first half but a downhill and disappointing second half is what Meri Pyaari Bindu is all about. However, summarizing the entire movie in that simple line would not be doing justice to the film. The film is more than that and we need to explore a lot of elements that make up the film.

It is a story about childhood friends Abhimanyu 'Bubla' Roy and his childhood friend and neighbour Bindu Shankar Narayanan. We have gotten a hint of how strong a bond they share right from the chapters and promotions of the movie. The film has in much greater degree. The entire first half that is in a flashback mode takes us back from the first time that Abhi and Bindu and how they became the best of friends and found shelter in each other! The narration follows a mix tape which has all the songs that define Abhi and Bindu's journey together and the concept will oddly remind you of the recent 13 Reasons Why, though the difference is wide apart!

The fun roller coaster ride of the first half stumbles through a slow and disappointing second half. But the performances from the lead actor and a great supporting cast keep the movie afloat! Ayushmann comes out as a natural and spontaneous actor. He passes off as the Bengali bhondrolok with quite an ease and we must say that those Bangla pronunciations were pretty great. It was so good to see Parineeti Chopra back in action after so long. There could have been more to her character who basically comes out as an ambitious and free spirited young girl who can go to any extent to find her happiness. But it was really saddening to reduce her character of a runaway bride, much like Shuddh Desi Romance. While she does want to live her dreams passionately follows her dream to be a singer, she along with her ambition is lost midway in the story.

What would really make you happy in the movie are the energy and the background music in the movie. Both the lead, along with the supporting cast has a contagious energy that will be transported to the audience. You'll love each and every character. And what is best is the old world feel that the entire North Kolkata along with the old songs will exhume. That is really a deadly combination.

The second half goes on back and forth in time and stretches a tad too long before coming to a disappointing end. We get the intention of the script writer and director who wants to convey a realistic story to us. But to be honest, our audience is not yet ready for such an end that will not offer any escape but will hold out an uncomfortable mirror in front of us!

The movie is good. But it could have been better. Go and watch the movie if you are looking for a good time pass film but not rooting for an OTT end!
