Verdict - What makes Nil Battey Sannata a winner is its positive facet of what otherwise could have been a depressing story. It's a Celebration!

Nil Battey Sannata is so sweetly crafted that it can make you like 'Maths'! Trust me. In a movie that's layered with a heavy load of social significance has deep down a heart so touching that its simplicity will amuse you, grapple your conscience and eventually move your emotional cord. Directed by Ashwini Iyer Tiwari, Nil Battey Sannata is exactly what it is suggestive of, 'short and sweet'!

Chanda Sahay (Swara Bhaskar) is a single mother who has high hopes for her daughter Apeksha, currently taking school. To feed her routine demands and education, Chanda works as a maid for different people along with taking odd jobs. Looking at her daughter's poor academic performance and her baffling desire to be a maid like her, Chanda takes Ratna Pathak Shah's advise to join her daughter's school and take up studies herself as a student. Embarrassed by her mother's bizarre strategy to get her to study, Apeksha brazens out with Chanda. In quest to find some glory for her child, how Chanda discovers a life herself to eventually give it a meaningful shape is what Nil Battey Sannata further unfolds.

Despite being filmed and told through a Government school's academic window, film's portions will take you straight back to your classrooms. How many of you actually remember being told the answer to a math question is hidden in the question itself? At one point of time when Chanda asks his fellow student how does he cope with Maths, he tenderly replies, "Maths Ko Apni Zindagi Ka Hissa Bana Lo, Maths Mazedaar Lagne Lagega." It is moments like these that are so pragmatically spread that Nil Battey Sannata seems an easy watch. However, film's real heart is placed in the tough, emotional and at times fuming relationship between a mother and her daughter. The struggle that Chanda takes up with a smile to ensure her daughter gets what she has dreamt for her, is what makes this 95 minute narration so much richer than what it normally would have been.

Filmmaker Ashwini Iyer who apparently is the wife of filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari seemed to have detailed a real life version that an Indian parent can very easily relate to. Shot at real locations with subtle background to compliment, Nil Battey Sannata is no Taare Zameen Par or a Stanley Ka Dabba, it is a sweet facet of everyday's life.

What makes Nil Battey Sannata a winner is its positive facet of what otherwise could have been a depressing story. We don't see Swara Bhaskar begging people around for money so she could feed her child and herself. At no point of time does Ashwini try to win your sympathy which speaks loud and clear of what she aimed at showcasing.

While the film clearly belongs to the already endowed Swara Bhaskar, let's give her the credit that's so evidently due. To have carried such difficult part with such restrained expressions and compassionate attitude, full marks to her. The child playing her daughter Ria is good and creates enough moments in the film to make you realise the depth in her character. Ratna Pathak Shah though in an extended cameo is lovely and Sanjay Suri as an IAS officer in a couple scenes will make you smile. Pankaj Triathi as he is so capable of, performs his heart out as the Maths teacher/Principal and will remind you of one of your own.

Nil Battey Sannata is an accomplishment because it doesn't try to win your sympathies, but successfully attempts to earn your hearts. I spent most part of my time watching this crisp film with a smile and yet came out with my heart filled with the rooted emotions brought out later. If it could make 'Mathematics' look sweet, think what it can do to you!
