Padmaavat — originally named Padmavati till the Central Board of Film Certification imposed a change in title, tells the tale of Rani Padmavati, second wife of Maharawal Ratan Singh, king of Chittor situated in today’s Rajasthan. Ratan Singh comes across Padmavati in an accident when he visits Singhal, now in Srilanka to obtain its renowned pearls for his first wife. They fall for each other and Padmavati returns with him to Chittor as his second bride. Via a series of events, Alauddin Khilji, the then sultan of Delhi, hears of the woman’s exceptional beauty and because he wants to have every “nayaab cheez” of the world — he attacks Chittor to get her from Ratan Singh. And in the end, when Ratan Singh is dodged and defeated, Padmavati kills herself along with all the other female adults and children of Chittor in the form of Jauhar, where women would commit suicide by jumping into fire instead of risking being used physically and emotionally by a rival army when faced with defeat.

    Performances

Ranveer Singh aka Allauddin Khilji has surely done an extraordinary job as the mad ruler Khilji but wasn’t he a little over-enthusiastic? Deepika Padukone aka Rani Padmaavat had the same aura, expression, body language as she was in Bajirao Mastani...I found her to be the playing just a second version of Bajirao. I, personally, did not find Shahid Kapoor fitting into the role of Ratan Singh. His body language was differing from his dialogue delivery. I couldn’t connect the dialogues with his built. I think someone of the built like Randeep Hooda or Saif Ali Khan would have fit the bill much.

From the very first scene, Bhansali’s goal has been pretty clear: to glorify Rajputs and demonise the Khiljis, to please the larger Hindu groups via Rajputs by scandalizing a Muslim king. And so, while Ratan Singh looks pure, as if his pyaara sa, gora sachehra has been newly cleansed by a facial, Alauddin is a perpetually dirty-faced devil, his face forever tainted with blood and mud even when he is not in a battle. His hair is wild, his walk almost animal-like, his eyes at all times either narrowed to cuts or widened to convey his cunning intent, while Ratan looks godly. When Alauddin desires a woman, he is shown as lustful, but when Ratan Singh betrays his first queen for Padmavati, it is just pure love and romance.

    Songs

They have that same Hum Dil chuke sanam, Ram-Leela and Bajirao Mastani kinda feels in them. However, they are good enough to find a place in your playlist for a month or two.

    Is it a must watch?

Ummm....for the sets and costumes and to see how handsome Ranveer Singh looks, then yes and also if you want to know how Deepika Padukone would look like in Bajirao Mastani 2, if it’s ever made.

I’m going with two-and-half out of five.
