Chess is generally seen as a boring subject for most of the people, especially as a subject of a movie. But after seeing Pawn Sacrifice, most of the people will change their opinion about this nail-biting game of thriller.

Pawn Sacrifice is a true story based on Bobby Fischer who was an American Chess legend. It's a story containing so many layers. In 1972, when the cold war between USA & USSR was on all-time high, a chess match was held between Boris Spassky, USSR's champion & Bobby Fischer, USA's champion. Bobby was undoubtedly the most brilliant mind in Chess but Boris wasn't lacking behind either.

As a biopic, the most important elements that can hold it are acting & direction. Pawn Sacrifice, the biopic of Bobby Fischer, manages to get brilliant acting out of Toby Maguire, Lily Rabe & Liev Schreiber. As a director, Edward Zwick gives a complete justice to the story & doesn't leave any fold unturned. It's a difficult story to manage but Edward Zwick managed it with conviction. There is not a point where you might feel bored during the film.

Toby Maguire has done a brilliant portrayal of Bobby Fischer. He's an eccentric genius (as Fischer & as an actor as well). The most striking performance as a villain this year has to be Liev Schreiber. He's played a Russian genius's character too well.

Even though the subject of the film is mainly a game of Chess between geniuses of 2 rival countries, you don't have to be knowing the game of Chess. If you love edge-of-your-seat thriller, love the topic of the cold war, and/or just love eccentric characters, this is a must watch film for you. Way better than Katti Batti & at par with Everest & Black Mass.
