“If historical drama with some doses of action is what you like, this one's just the right thing to watch. Otherwise, a paisa-vasool flick!”

Set in 140 AD this period movie is the story of a young mans search for a lost Legion led by his father which disappeared in a battle in Britain along with the Legions seal of The Eagle. His father has been accused of cowardice and the soldier wants to find out the truth about the disappearance of the Legion and get the seal back.

This is a richly shot movie with great views of lush green countryside, beautiful shimmering rivers, misty forests and pretty authentic looking sets of Roman encampments and tribal villages. The emotional bond between the Roman soldier Marcus and his slave Esca who finally becomes his friend and helps him in his search is quite well explored. A lot of action sequences are shot in the dark so its hard to say who is killing whom.

Channing Tatum as the young Roman soldier looks a bit too soft for the role he is playing. Right from the start of the movie his character wants to find out the truth about the Legions disappearance and restore his fathers honour. I would have thought that he would look meaner. But he has the look of a boy lost in a large playground on his first day of school. Jamie Bell as Esca does a slightly better job with his role than Tatum.

The period costumes of the tribes are worth a mention. The vicious tribe of the Seal People have chalk on their faces and look like the Skinheads one saw photos of in the 80s. Just goes to show that fashion always comes full circle. I am waiting with bated breath for the armoured skirt look for men in the next Lakme Fashion Week.

This is a decent watch for those who like historical dramas with some doses of action. I kind of enjoyed watching it. I think you can even take older kids along since there is no vulgar sex or gory violence in it.
