Verdict - A tad lesser than the first one, entertaining and spectacular nonetheless

    Rio 2Watch trailerRelease date : April 11, 2014

Rio, the 2011 animation marvel was largely an unsung piece of grandeur that made a lot of money but never went on to make a mark for itself in the history of timeless animation. Sad, since it was one of those rare films where animation lights up the screen like a set of fircrackers on diwali. Rio 2, the sequel doesnt exactly pack as much punch as the first one, yet it does sail through due to the now trademark exuberance and celebration that one expects of Rio series.

Blu and Jewel are now in Rio, raising their family of three. They decide to fly to the Amazon when Blu's guardians Tulio and Linda find the last settlements of Blue maccaws in the jungle. Blu meets Jewels father and family in the wild, finds his city bred ways alien to the forest, all while the other subplot of a vile man cutting of the trees in the forest illegally threatens the very survival of the last of these gorgeous blue birds.

As a story, Rio 2 falls short of the first one. There are far too many subplots to cover up for the lack of a single strong story line, not all of which are convincingly explored. The quintessential wit and comedy though are there aplenty, so are the beautiful songs interspreading the proceedings. Anne Hathway and Jesse return as Jewel and Blu, recreating the perfect odd ball opposites attract couple from the first part all over again and add life to the characters. I also loved the wonderfully cuckkoed Poison frog and her love for a bird. Quirks like these made the wathcing so much fun despite the shortcomings.

What also added to the delight were the spectacular animation: detailing of the amazon to the outstanding ariel dance sequences, everything spelt GRAND in capitals like never before. Added to it are some foottapping numbers that just makeyou want to sing along. The only glitch here, 3D makes a lot of vibrance go dull.

Catch Rio2 if you loved the first part. Taket he kids along, for there is a good message about environment and its importance. Take the elders along just so they understand that animation films is not all about kids play! watch it, for any reason, but do watch it.
